WBBA Industry Working Groups

Connect with your peers to meet the unique challenges your Organization faces.

Communicators Group
(Open to ALL WBBA Members)

The goal of this group is to give people who are responsible for “getting the word out” for their respective organizations a closed-forum to discuss the unique issues, problems and challenges that face the people within these organizations who are charged with fulfilling the role of communications, public relations, marketing, community outreach and investor relations, whether by specific title or by having it as one of their responsibilities.

HR Group
(Open to WBBA Core & Institution Member HR professionals, no service providers)

You are invited to join over 50 of your HR colleagues from WBBA member companies, as we network, share ideas and exchange information about the challenges and issues we encounter while working in the biotechnology and biomedical fields. The Human Resources Group offers a variety of ways to connect with your colleagues. This is an excellent way to learn up-to-date information from professionals within our industry. You do not need to have an HR title in order to attend these meetings; you simply need to perform the human resources function for your company.

Clean Science Group
(Open to any WBBA member interested in clean science and sustainability)

The goal of the WBBA Clean Science Group is to have a variety of representatives of the region's life science community dialoguing about solutions to minimize the impact of our scientific pursuits on the region. We also want to educate each other on the systems that are currently available to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and the associated costs of such systems. Biotech is an industry reliant on sterile, one-use products to ensure high quality research. This process generates a lot of waste. Is biotech doing everything it can to reduce waste, and increase recycling? Are we sacrificing the health of our planet for the health of people? Is there a way to create science that is clean and healthy for both the planet and for the people we are trying to heal? Are you interested in dialoguing about creating clean science? If so, then join the WBBA Clean Science Group on LinkedIn. We would like to have participation from various groups in the lab including facilities, operations, and lab managers. Together, we can help heal people, progress science and have a healthy place to live.

Letter from the President

Chris Rivera

Can you believe that 2013 is almost half over?

Q2 was as busy as our first quarter.  We hosted several events like Washington as an Antibody Hub, Mobile Health: In the Market, In the Lab and In Between and a breakfast meeting at this year’s BIO International Convention, where 75 attendees from all over the globe came to hear about life sciences in Washington state!  We also hosted Johnson & Johnson for our latest VIP Forum, and hosted another WINGS investor dinner.  Our 4th annual Life Science Leadership Summit in Spokane was a big success, with more than 100 attendees from across the state, including company executives, government officials and some of the leading research institutions in the state!

It is that time of year that our attention is really focused on Life Science Innovation Northwest (LSINW).  LSINW is our largest event of the year, with nearly 1000 attendees from all over the world coming to Seattle to meet with the leading life science innovators in the Pacific Northwest.

Member Spotlight- The Professional Science Master's Degree at Washington State Univeristy

Washington State University launched the state’s first online Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree program in 2010, designed to equip scientists with the professional skills and credentials needed to advance their careers. The PSM is available online and on the Pullman campus through the School of Molecular Biosciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

The degree consists of science course work, professional course work and a business internship, which replaces the thesis component of a master’s program. Through interdisciplinary training, students learn to become leaders and managers in a professional environment.

The program has grown exponentially since its inception. “We are really pleased with the growth of the program,” said Norah McCabe, clinical associate professor of molecular biosciences and director of the PSM program. “The program not only helps place students in employment, but also helps WSU build crucial connections with Washington state businesses.”

Sally Francis, co-director of the PSM program for the Council of Graduate Schools, says employers in industry, the nonprofit sector and government are clamoring for employees with advanced training in STEM and professional skills.

Most PSM program directors say their graduates have no trouble finding jobs that pay well and make good use of their training. Graduates of the program have found that the degree adds a high level of business expertise to their credentials, making them more marketable in an evolving interdisciplinary job market.
