Economic Development
The Life Sciences Sector fuels the vitality of Washington state, increasing its standard of living through the economic, political, and social well-being of its citizens. To continue to drive our innovation economy we must combine our efforts to nurture entrepreneurism and boost creativity though continual leadership and vision.
In a recent report by the Chairman of the Council for American Medical Innovation, Richard A. Gephardt, “Medical innovation has traditionally been a cornerstone of a flourishing America, especially in Washington state. Besides keeping us healthy, the U.S. health-care industry provides good jobs: approximately 14 million jobs today and an expected 3 million new jobs between 2006 and 2016—more than any other industry—according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

WBBA participates in Governor's 2011 Trade Delegation to Europe
"We are winding down our trade mission in France and Germany today. It has been an extremely productive trip, and I am confident will lead to many new and ongoing collaborations with many of our Member organizations."
"As soon as we landed in Germany, we wasted no time getting to work. I joined our life-sciences delegation to attend an international summit on life sciences in Hannover. There – the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association’s Chris Rivera not only celebrated his 50th birthday (happy birthday Chris!), but I also witnessed as he signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate with his counter-parts in Germany to ensure advancement and job-growth for both regions. And they’re wasting no time collaborating! Life science leaders from Germany have agreed to visit Washington state in July, 2012 for our annual life sciences summit."
Life Sciences and Global Health growth and activity in South Lake Union surpasses expectations | City of Seattle Office of Economic Development
Seattle has become one of the nation's leading healthcare and life science centers with a significant concentration of innovative healthcare providers, biotechnology firms, global health organizations, and life science research institutions. Seattle's broader healthcare and life science cluster totals over 90,000 workers with annual payroll of $4 billion. On May 26th, Mayor Mike McGinn met with stakeholders to discuss ongoing city actions to create jobs in the healthcare, global health and life sciences industries, and create opportunities for Seattle residents to earn these high quality jobs. An economic impact study of South Lake Union and an analysis of Seattle's life sciences and global health industries show continued growth in these sectors. "Building on our strengths is an important part of the Seattle Jobs Plan," said McGinn. "The success in South Lake Union with the life sciences and global health sector is an example of successful public-private partnership. We are committed to continued engagement with industry and community leaders on issues of job training, power reliability, zoning, transportation infrastructure and urban design to continue this momentum."
