Letter from the President
Can you believe that 2013 is almost half over?
Q2 was as busy as our first quarter. We hosted several events like Washington as an Antibody Hub, Mobile Health: In the Market, In the Lab and In Between and a breakfast meeting at this year’s BIO International Convention, where 75 attendees from all over the globe came to hear about life sciences in Washington state! We also hosted Johnson & Johnson Development Corp. for our latest VIP Forum, and hosted another WINGS investor dinner. Our 4th annual Life Science Leadership Summit in Spokane was a big success, with more than 100 attendees from across the state, including company executives, government officials and some of the leading research institutions in the state!
It is that time of year that our attention is really focused on Life Science Innovation Northwest (LSINW). LSINW is our largest event of the year, with nearly 1000 attendees from all over the world coming to Seattle to meet with the leading life science innovators in the Pacific Northwest.
John Crowley, CEO and Chairman of Amicus Therapeutics will keynote this year’s conference. The name John Crowley might ring a bell if you ever saw the movie Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser (playing John); it was based on John’s efforts to save his children’s life. John ultimately founded Novozymes, which developed a lifesaving drug for patients with Pompe’s disease. We are very excited that John will join us and share his story as a perfect example of why we all do this work for the wellbeing of our communities.
G. Steven Burrill will also provide his “State of the Industry” update, and hundreds of company, research, investor and partnering opportunities will be on display July 10 – 11 at the Washington state Convention Center. Don’t miss this event!
In addition to John and Steven, our expert panelists will discuss topics like mergers & acquisitions, starting up your own company, how to raise money in a tough economy, the power of public and private partnerships and where information technology is taking life sciences in the next decade!
Speakers are confirmed from some of the world’s largest and most highly respected Limited Partners (LPs), VCs, payers, research institutes, health care IT experts and non-profits and strategic partners like: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Merck, GSK, Novartis and Abbott Diagnostics to name a few. This is an event you cannot miss, so please tell your friends and colleagues to attend and check out our website!
Make sure that you also check out our 2013 activity calendar, you don’t want to miss any of the great events, or opportunities to network or to be a sponsor this year.
I would like to thank all of you for an outstanding 2013 thus far! Without our incredible members, the WBBA would not be able to provide the support that is contributing to one of Washington’s largest and fastest growing industries.
I look forward to seeing each of you in the upcoming days. Stay tuned to additional events and activities by following us at www.washbio.org, or follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.
