South Lake Union Rezone
On March 19, the Seattle Times published an op-ed article written by WBBA President Chris River and Downtown Seattle Association President/CEO Kate Joncas, calling for the Seattle City Council to adopt the South Lake Union rezone that had been eight years in the making. In Early May, the Council unanimously passed a compromise rezone bill for South Lake Union. South Lake Union’s development has been driven in large part by the ongoing growth of the life sciences industry in the community. WBBA will continue to monitor the story to protect global competitiveness and growth in the life sciences in the area.
Governor Convened Special Session of the State Legislature
Governor Jay Inslee convened a special 30-day session of the state legislature on Monday, May 13. The legislator’s primary task is to agree upon and pass a two-year capital and operating budget for the period beginning July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2015. If a budget resolution is not passed during the 30 days, the Governor will call another 30-day special session.
WBBA Needs Your Help in Preserving and Renewing Industry Tax Credits
The Washington state high tech (which includes life sciences) sales and use tax deferral and B&O R&D tax credits are under threat this legislative session and will expire at the end of 2014. WBBA is working nonstop to preserve and renew the credits. We need your help. Our elected officials need to understand how the credits make a difference in your company or institution. When WBBA reaches out to you to learn your story, please participate. For more information contact Patti Tenney or WBBA’s public affairs intern Bevan Annaloro.

Help WBBA Fight to Repeal the Medical Device Excise Tax
WBBA continues to work with national organizations AdvaMed and MDMA as well as members of our federal delegation to repeal the medical device excise tax. We thank Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, Congressman Dave Reichert and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, for co-sponsoring H.R. 523, the repeal bill in the House of Representatives. We also thank Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for voting for repeal. There’s still some distance to the finish line and that’s where you can help. Visit www.no2point3.com and sign the petition calling for repeal of the 2.3 percent excise tax.
Strong and Secure IP Protections Needed in US Trade Agreements
WBBA signed a joint letter with the Washington Council on International Trade, the International Trade Alliance and Northeastern University to Acting US Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis calling for strong and secure IP protection including, but not limited to, 123 years of data protection for biologics in any trade agreements going forward from the Pacific Rim to Europe.
BIO releases bioscience economic development report and guide
More state governors than ever attended the 2013 BIO International Convention in Chicago in April, verifying that competition for biotech jobs is fierce. A standing room only crowd listened to Governors Rick Perry of Texas, Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania and Jay Nixon of Missouri along with Jack Lavin, Director of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, talk about what they were doing to attract, retain and grow the life sciences talent in their states. Following the Governors’ comments, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) released its Bioscience Economic Development: Legislative Priorities, Best Practices, and Return on Investment report.
Biotechnology Industry Report 2013- Ernst & Young
Ernst & Young released their Biotechnology Industry Report Beyond borders: Matters of Evidence at the recent 2013 BIO International Convention.
Make Medical Research a National Priority
Biomedical and health research fuels private sector innovation and the development of new therapies and devices to prevent and fight disease. Funding cuts threaten scientific discoveries that could lead to new therapies and potential cures for deadly disease. Read more about what you can do to help!
Advocacy for WBBA Members
One of the most important, but least known benefits of WBBA membership, is our advocacy and public policy work. WBBA’s strong, active Government Affairs Council works diligently to ensure a vigorous life science community here in Washington. Grassroots action can make all the difference on certain policy issues. If you are willing to participate in grassroots initiatives, please contact Patti Tenney (or at 206-456-9566).
