Life Sciences Discovery Fund Authority Awards Grants, Receives Praise
In December, the Life Sciences Discovery Fund Authority announced over $1 million in grants given to give companies to support commercial development of new health and healthcare products. Read the press release.
Nanostring Takes Great Strides
NanoString, led by former Genzyme executive Brad Gray, raised $15.3 million in a sale of preferred stock. All of NanoString's previous backers joined the financing, according to Xconomy. Days later, it announced good news for its new breast cancer diagnostic test, which may accurately measure the risk of recurrence for a particular type of breast cancer. Read more.
Spotlight Falls on Seattle's Life Sciences Industry
A new report from the Startup Genome ranked Seattle fourth as a global startup hub, ahead of New York and Boston and just behind Tel Aviv and Los Angeles. According to Geekwire, The Startup Genome takes a look at a number of factors, including talent, capital, infrastructure support, number of new startups created, the performance of those startups and how quickly the communities adopt new technologies. IDRI Receives $10 Million Gates Foundation Grant for Vaccine Work
In December, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a three-year grant to IDRI (formerly the Infectious Disease Research Institute) of nearly $10 million. The grant will focus on formulating new and improved adjuvants — ingredients that enhance the effectiveness of vaccines.
